Clinical Definition

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder on the autistic spectrum. The condition is considered present from infancy. Individuals with Asperger syndrome may vary in clinical presentation. In general, the disorder may cause nonverbal communication difficulties, repetitive behavior, social impairment and problems with sensory input.

Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger disorder (AD), is considered a developmental disorder, which usually affects social skills and problems understanding the subtleties of nonverbal communication.

The syndrome is often grouped with other disorders, specifically those that fall under the category of autistic spectrum disorders. Asperger syndrome differs from autism, however, in that symptoms tend to be less severe, and children with the disorder do not have cognitive delays or delays in speech.
