Clinical Definition

A wart is an abnormal fibrous growth, visible on the skin and caused by a viral infection. Types include common, flat warts, plantar and venereal (Condyloma acuminatum) warts. Caused by direct contact with the contagious human papilloma virus (HPV), warts can spread from person-to-person or via direct contact with an object used by an infected person.

Warts are the result of direct contact with the contagious human papilloma virus (HPV). Numerous HPV types have been identified: Some cause skin warts, others cause warts in other areas, including genital, or venereal, warts. They can appear as small, rough bumps and they may appear flesh-toned, pink, white or tan.

If you have warts, you can spread them to other parts of your body. If you have warts, do not pick at them, and wash your hands after touching to reduce the risk of contagion.   Treatments include medications to wipe out the growth, or even surgical removal.
