The Link Between the Increase in Diabetes and The Decrease in Nutrition in Our Foods

Increase in Diabetes

Why has there been an increase diabetes in America? Find out about the link with nutrition.

Why is diabetes on the rise in America? Some people believe that the state of our environment is causing an increase in diabetes. Research that was conducted at Rutgers University has found that our farming methods have a lot to do with the quality of our food and health. Additionally, the Firman Bear Report has revealed some shocking evidence that our farming methods may have a direct link to the increase in diabetes. Several factors were involved in their findings that deserve serious consideration, including:

  1. One of the most significant findings in the Firman Bear Report was the quality between organic and inorganic produce. When comparing the nutritional differences between specific vegetables, the researchers found that organic produce contained a high amount of vitamins and minerals. The inorganic, chemically sprayed produce contained very small amounts of vital nutrients, which may be causing deleterious effects to our health and one of the reasons for the increase in diabetes. Pesticide laden produce is seriously degraded in terms of nutrient value, and is not adequately providing the vital nutrients necessary for good health.
  1. The quality of our food also depends on the nutrient value of the soil that the food is grown in. Conventional farming methods incorporated crop rotation to give soil time to replenish itself, but today new farming methods annually reap several crops from the same plot of ground, never giving the soil a chance to replenish itself. The produce is only as good as the nutrients in the soil that it is grown in. Getting a minute amount of vitamins or minerals from our food is not enough to sustain good health. Nutrients work synergistically and there has to be enough of each vital nutrient in the food to support life. This lack of adequate nutrition in our food supply may be the reason why many more people are getting sick and one of the reasons for the increase in diabetes.
  1. Another speculation made by some university biologists is that rising carbon dioxide levels in the environment are directly linked to disease and poor health. Speculation has suggested that climate change, and greater amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, is increasing the carbohydrate levels in plants. The increased amount of carbohydrates in our produce may be causing higher rates of obesity and also an increase in diabetes. Americans may think that by eating a plant-based diet they are getting the vital nutrients necessary to sustain life, but instead we are adding more sugars and carbohydrates to our body and very little in the way of vitamins and minerals. These adverse factors are what may be leading to higher rates of malnutrition, infant deaths, compromised immune systems, obesity and an increase in diabetes.
  1. New farming methods are based on mass production, distribution and profits, and most use chemicals and gmo seeds. Organic farming, on the other hand, does not use chemicals on their crops. Once chemicals are used on the crops, the soil becomes polluted and the chemicals may flow into underground water systems, contaminating drinking water. Instead of destroying the soil with chemicals, organic farming actually increases the nutrient value of the soil, and the plants. Diabetics should eat organic produce to get the vital nutrients required for good health, and to help avoid the adverse reactions from the pesticides and chemical fertilizers used in inorganic produce.

Why is diabetes on the rise in America? There is probably a variety of reasons, but if carbon dioxide levels and lack of nutrition values are a contributing factor to the increase in diabetes, then diabetics should make sure they are getting enough nutrients to support their body against environmental causes.
