You should always consult a nutritionist before trying to lose weight with type 1 diabetes. A nutritionist can help you develop a diet plan that allows you to lose weight safely. Nutritionists can calculate a sensible diet that includes a safe amount of carbohydrates to keep you functioning and feeling well while reducing the amount of bad fats and wasted calories in your diet.

Keep your doctor informed and part of the process

While drastically decreasing the amount of food you take is not safe when you have diabetes, gradually reducing your calorie intake under the supervision of your doctor may work. You will probably have to maintain strict journals of your food intake and glucose levels, so your doctor can adjust your insulin dose as needed.

Have some patience

It is important to remember that weight loss cannot happen overnight, particularly with diabetes. Set small goals and don’t get discouraged if it takes a while to get results.
