Set yourself an achievable weight loss goal of approximately 5 to 10 percent of your current body weight to start. For someone who weighs 200 pounds, this would mean losing 20 pounds.
  2. Exercise regularly

    High levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, raise your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Switching to a low fat, low-cholesterol diet that features plenty of fresh veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats (such as olive oil) can lower levels of bad cholesterol and decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Researchers are still trying to find out how to prevent diabetes type 1, but as of now, there is no way that exists. Type 1 diabetes, which used to be called juvenile onset diabetes, is actually an autoimmune disease that attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. While there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, you can reduce your risk of serious complications by following the lifestyle tips above and adhering strictly to your insulin treatment schedule.
